Quell The Fire Within

By Kevin DiDonato MS, CSCS, CES

The fire of inflammation needs to be stopped.

As a review, you learned how inflammation may destroy cells in YOUR body.

You have also learned that sometimes you have NO IDEA that your cells are inflamed.

Now you know inflammation needs to be stopped DEAD in its tracks, before there is any more damage to cells in your body.

But it is easier said than done!

It’s like walking into Hell not being fully prepared for what is lurking around the corner.

But YOUR body does have a rescue plan of its own.

Your immune system and the cells in your body have a built-in defense system.

However, like any system, it can fail, leading to damage.  And the damage needs to be repaired.

Your VERY OWN CELLS have a built-in army that puts out flames of inflammation.

In the mitochondria, there are antioxidants which may quell the onslaught of inflammation by free radicals.

But is there another option?

Of course there is!

Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables may raise your antioxidant level.

But are you eating enough? That is the question.

It takes a large ABUNDANCE of fruits and vegetables EACH DAY to provide enough antioxidants to extinguish the fires of inflammation.

One nutrient found in high amounts in Prograde Genesis may be effective at fighting inflammation as well as giving you a multitude of other health benefits.

But this is just the first step in fighting inflammation.

Let me explain.

Pterostilbene is a nutrient which has been around for ages.

Discovered in the red sandlewood plant, this nutrient helps plants fight off microbial, viral, and fungus infections as well as gives them protection from powerful UV rays.

Plants have a natural sunscreen already built in!

As research and interest grew, it was discovered in more than just the red sandlewood plant.

Researchers discovered grapevines and blueberries also held a high content of pterostilbene.

Pterostilbene has been used for centuries to heal cardiovascular disease and help treat diabetes.

Why?

It is better absorbed by your body and is biologically more active then polyphenols like Resveratrol.

And it is more powerful than Resveratrol!

As a review, you have learned that heart disease, obesity, and diabetes all begin as an inflammatory process.

So it should come as no surprise to you to learn pterostilbene is a potent antioxidant, which may cool down inflammation and associated pain.

How does it work?  Let me explain…

Fighting Inflammation In YOUR Body

You might remember tissue and cells release hormones to regulate metabolism and energy.  And you might also remember that tissue, which becomes inflamed, releases pro-inflammatory cytokines and enzymes, raising your inflammatory response.

If you are having a hard time remembering, read this article on fat cell dysfunction.

I will give you a minute….

Pterostilbene may inhibit those enzymes and cytokines from invading YOUR body.  Essentially shutting off the inflammatory response DEAD in its tracks!

But it isn’t done yet!

Pterostilbene can also prevent cell membranes from damage by protecting it against lipid peroxidation.

Wait a second….what the heck is lipid peroxidation?

As you know, free radicals cause damage.  And this damage affects ALL CELLS in your body - this includes the cell membranes.

Most cell membrane makeup consists of a lipid bi-layer in its structure.  When a free radical steps in to steal an electron from the membrane, it steals it from the lipid.

This process damages the integrity of the membrane, disrupting the integrity of the cell.

So by increasing pterostilbene levels in your body, you are protecting the membrane of your cell.

How?

Pterostilbene donates one if its electrons to the free radical.  This stabilizes the free radical to prevent damage to the cell.

There is also an enzyme which is responsible for increasing inflammation and pain, ten-fold.

When there is inflammation, you have increased levels of COX-2 enzyme.

But pterostilbene down-regulates COX-2 enzyme activity by inhibiting NF-kB.

(NF-kB is a significant player in inflammation, so inhibiting it is a good thing!)

So by inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme, you are preventing inflammation from running rampant in your body.

Let’s shift our focus now to Diabetes.

Diabetes And Pterostilbenes

Diabetes affects potent enzymes in the liver and kidneys, decreasing their activity.

These enzymes are potent, and help break down nutrients that come through the liver.

Now think of your liver as a swimming pool.   A proper filter system keeps the water in the pool clean and refreshing.

Diabetes can muddy this pool, rendering the filter system ineffective.

The good news: pterostilbene is the pool man, who cleans up the pool.

Increased pterostilbene levels result in better activity of these enzymes.

Result: the liver and kidneys are able to function better, resulting in a more efficient system.

Another disease which also has its origins as an inflammatory process is cancer.

Now how can pterostilbene help fight cancer?

Cancer Fighter?

Other potent cells help stimulate the process of turning a cell into a cancer cell.

CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 are cells which infiltrate and transform the cell into carcinogenic intermediaries - basically the beginning of cancer development!

Pterostilbene may be a potent inhibitor of these enzymes.    In fact, it inhibits the activity, stopping the process from ever evolving.

And it’s not done with cancer yet.

A form of cell death is called apoptosis.   This is where the cell turns on itself and destroys itself.

Pterostilbene may induce apoptosis and may inhibit growth of cancer cells!

Not just one type of cancer cell, but a number of different kinds!  Here is the list:

• human gastric cells

• breast cancer cells

• prostate cancer cells

• bladder cancer cells

• liver cancer cells

• lung cancer cells

• melanoma cancer cells

A Potent Antioxidant

Pterostilbene is a potent antioxidant, which may prevent damage by free radicals, slowing and halting cell damage.

It may also be a potent nutrient against cancer by inhibiting the growth of carcinogenic cells and enabling cells to turn on themselves.

When cells are inflamed, you need a strong antioxidant to put out the flames.   Nutrients found in fruits and vegetables, may put out your internal fire and may prevent cellular damage.
